Wikipedia, the online encyclopedia that allows anyone to edit its entries, says it is losing contributors.

Founder Jimmy Wales says administrators are scrambling to simplify what he called “convoluted” editing templates that may be discouraging people from writing and editing Wikipedia’s entries.

In another effort to encourage volunteers to stay active, Wales says the site has introduced a new feature called WikiLove that lets users post positive feedback.

He was speaking to the Associated Press on Thursday from the website’s annual conference, held this year in Haifa, Israel.

President Obama unveiled his plans to combat what the United States is calling “Transnational Organized Crime” (TOC) in a paper released by the White House this morning.

The document is called “Strategy to Combat Transnational Organized Crime” and focuses primarily on encouraging more international cooperation to target organized criminals dealing in smuggling people, smuggling drugs, committing acts of terror and online financial crime.

The focus of the cybercrime component appears to be better information sharing, investigation and cooperation among nations to investigate the use of the internet and technology by organized criminals. The President acknowledges that the US must do more, but that with the distributed nature of these crimes around the world it can only be effective if governments work together internationally.

As a firestorm of debate rages in Congress over economic stability, the Department of Commerce released a report on Wednesday asserting that jobs in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) play “a key role in the sustained growth and stability of the U.S. economy.”

Although science and engineering workers represent a relatively small portion of the labor market, the report projected that between 2008 and 2018, science and technology-focused jobs would grow by 17 percent — nearly twice the 9.8 percent rate of growth for other occupations.

“One of the real concerns is, how do you create a competitive economy and workforce?” Acting Deputy Secretary of Commerce Rebecca Blank told HuffPost. “We need to create skills that will keep us at the forefront — and this is a group that is crucial for the country’s long term competitiveness and innovation.”
