Two-year old online game Moshi Monsters has just reached a sizable milestone: 50 million registered users.

Moshi Monsters is a social online game/community that allows kids 6 to 12 to adopt virtual pets, tool around a virtual land called Monstro City, play games to earn virtual currency and communicate with other kids in a moderated, safe environment. The franchise also includes toys (coming soon), books, video games, trading cards and a Moshi magazine. Moshi will also soon begin its foray into music, live tours, a TV platform and film.

Moshi, founded by London-based startup Mind Candy, also reports that it has more than 15 million registered users (out of the total 50 million) in North America. Apparently, the game gets one signup per second.

Fifty million is a pretty hefty community, but it makes sense considering the rise of the digital native we have been privy to lately. In October, a study conducted by Internet security firm AVG found that 92% of children in the U.S. have an online presence by the time they are two, compared to 73% in western Europe.

Pumps in $100 million for 20 channels hosting original content

The king of streaming video, YouTube, has made a success story out of hosting user generated content; stealing eyeballs off television networks, thanks to a user base that’s warmed up to the freedom of content that comes directly from the source and without the meddling of any TV network or production houses. According to a Wall Street Journal report, Google wants to bite into the broadcast TV model by hosting around 20 channels showcasing several hours of professionally produced original programming per week. YouTube got a cool $100 million from Google to implement the original programming.

The streaming website will be competing with traditional TV networks with its own model of original content, which is a daunting proposition considering the quality of professionally produced network content. The question is – will the average user, who fires up YouTube expecting memetic videos uploaded by random users, want to see YouTube’s version of network programming?

Homeland Security Taps Twitter, Facebook For New Alert System

Published by pratyushkp on April 10th, 2011 - in Social, Technology

The Department of Homeland Security plans to use Twitter and Facebook to warn citizens about threats with its new National Terrorism Advisory System. The new program will in part replace the old color-coded system, put in place following the 9/11 terrorist attacks, that’s being phased out. Please RT, etc.

The new system, which the AP says is expected to launch on April 27, will post warnings to the social networks “when appropriate.” In truth it’s probably not too far removed from the emergency broadcast system warnings and tests that go out over TV and radio. Might as well tap into Twitter an Facebook if people are on them all day long, right?
