So you’re at the figurative checkout counter of Amazon.com, groceries and gadgets and George Foreman grill in your e-shopping cart, and you’re ready to charge your credit card. As you hover your mouse cursor over the final “Purchase” button, however, a single drop of nervous sweat forms above your temple. The question materializes in your mind, as you begin to fret: “Am I paying too much for this stuff?”

On Amazon, or any online shopping store, finding the lowest price can be difficult, not to mention nerve-wracking. That’s why we’ve put together these four things you should always remember when shopping on Amazon. The tips herein should help you make better purchasing decisions and ensure that you’re buying your items at an optimal time and price.

Here are our four best tips and tricks for shopping on Amazon. Your wallet (if it could, in fact, both talk and experience a feeling of gratitude) will thank you later:

DON’T LIMIT YOURSELF TO AMAZON

Thinking that Amazon offers, without exception, the best price for any given product is one trap that you can’t afford (literally) to fall into. When you’ve found the product that want, compare the Amazon price with prices on other websites by using a site like Google Shopping or PriceGrabber.

Browser extensions — lightweight programs that can be added to Firefox, Google Chrome, Internet Explorer, or Safari — are your friend here, too: PriceBlink, for Firefox, Chrome, Safari, and Internet Explorer, can sense when you are on a product page and can automatically notify you when it finds a cheaper price for the product you’re looking at on a different retailer’s page. Invisible Hand, for Chrome, Firefox, and Safari, is another popular option that provides similar price comparison functionality within your web browser.

The PriceBlink browser extension appears as a yellow bar at the top of many retailers’ websites, displaying prices at competing stores.

Adding a store comparison extension that can crawl the web for lower prices is a good start, and should save you a couple bucks here and there. But how do you know that a major price drop isn’t coming soon?

DON’T IGNORE THE PAST

Pardon the Ayn Rand-ian admonition, but studying historic prices on any product can help you avoid buying at an inopportune time. Just as the price of airline tickets fluctuate based on the day of the week or time of year, so too do the prices of many other products. On a macro level, knowing prime buying seasons for your gear is key: Lifehacker has a handy list of the best time to purchase just about anything you can imagine. (Time to stock up on wine and children’s clothes!)

Visualizing price changes over several days can be handy too, especially if you’re looking to buy used and want to see what an item would customarily go for. There are a few ways to do this for Amazon products: Using a browser extension is probably easiest, and there are dozens to choose from, including The Tracktor and The Camelizer. I use the extension from Keepa.com, which shows you a simple line graph of your product’s price history right beneath its basic information on Amazon.

If you add the Keepa.com extension to your Firefox or Google Chrome, this customizable chart will appear on every Amazon product page you visit.
If you’d rather not clutter your browser, there are several websites which allow you to manually input a product’s name or page URL to view its price history. Keepa.com, for example, does just this, as does the ever-popular (and memorably named)CamelCamelCamel.com.

DON’T SETTLE

Let’s say that the product you’re eyeing is sitting at an historically high price, according to your handy chart. Now what? You don’t want to blow cash on the price difference, and checking back on Amazon day after day, hour after after, to see if the price has dropped is a tedious option.

Luckily for your wallet and your sanity, several websites will email you (or tweet you, or Facebook message you) with a notification whenever your selected product’s price on Amazon goes down, or when a price hits a certain, user-specified low. TryKeepa.com, or CamelCamelCamel.com, or The Tracktor, or BuyLater.com, for those simple, smart services — it will cost you your email address, but it could save you money, especially if you identify a product at an unnatural peak in pricing.

DON’T STOP BELIEVIN’

It doesn’t always happen that the exact object of your desire becomes deeply discounted on some website as soon as you’re committed to purchasing — but hey, maybe you’ll get lucky!

If you know you’ve got a big purchase coming up (happy anniversary, Mom & Dad!),keep your eye on Amazon’s Gold Box page, which features both hour-long lightning sales and highlights freshly price-reduced items from around the site. You should also keep up with sites like DealNews and SlickDeals, which constantly update with coupons and sales from around the web. Both of those sites can be configured to send you alerts by retailer or by product category.

And remember, even if a product does show up in the Gold Box or on a deal website, that doesn’t automatically make it the cheapest or best purchase online. You still need to run discounted items through your price comparison software to ensure the “deal” is a good one.

DON’T FORGET SHIPPING

If you’re setting world records in online shopping — or just, you know, buying lots and lots of stuff — you should probably consider Amazon Prime. The $79/year service gives you free 2-day shipping on much of Amazon’s warehouse of products, and also includes access to a steadily improving library of streaming movies.

That’s for frequent buyers, obviously, and you can probably determine fairly easily whether Amazon Prime would benefit you. Otherwise, don’t be blindsided by a high shipping fee, or all your money-saving research and preparation could be wiped out.

Now, companies large and small — from Coca-Cola and The New York Times to your local bike shop or animal shelter — can set up their own Google+ profiles and connect with other users. Already, some pages have attracted thousands of followers. (Mashable’s Google+ page, for example, currently boasts just under 30,000.)

Google’s social network has experienced remarkable growth since its launch over the summer. The company announced in October that Google+ membership had reached 40 million, and the web giant continues to pursue new customers by gradually integrating its various web products with Google+. Earlier this month, Google rolled out a new Google+ sharing button for YouTube and new Google+ extensions for the Google Chrome browser. In addition, a ” target=”_hplink”>controversial update to Google Reader recently tied the product more closely to Google+, although users didn’t take to the change as willingly as they seem to have welcomed Google+ Pages.

Initially, Google actively tried to keep businesses out of Google+ by deleting non-human profiles. Google has finally changed its tune to match those of Facebook and Twitter, both of which have embraced the presence of brands in the social space.

The MSNBC-owned Breaking News has compiled a list of top news organizations to add to your circles on Google+. We chose nine that showed particular spark, be it frequent posts, interesting content or great photos. Check out the news organizations you need to be following on Google+.

PBS - Embedded videos, frequent posts and links to interesting content, even if it’s not PBS, are what make the Public Broadcasting Service’s Google+ profile worth a follow.

The Atlantic - Instead of just using snippets, The Atlantic’s Google+ posts seem specifically tailored for, well, Google+. Many are expandable and tell enough of the story that if you just want a quick overview, you wouldn’t even have to go to The Atlantic’s website. They also give a great daily run-down of top stories.

Time - On the Time profile, you can check out Time covers, find the Google+ profiles of the magazine’s writers and read about what’s going on at their offices. For example, on Tuesday they apparently held a discussion with Brian Williams, Jesse Eisenberg and other celebrities about who should be named 2011′s Time Person of the Year.

The Wall Street Journal- The Wall Street Journal already has over 9,000 followers, so it’s no surprise that they have a lot of chatter on their profile in the form of comments and shares. Because the comments come right after each post, they are actually easy, and dare we say enjoyable, to read. Is it possible that Google+ will usher in a new era where comments aren’t the worst things on the internet? The photo banner across the top of The Wall Street Journal’s profile features drawings of Barbie and Snoop Dogg, which should not be overlooked.

Mashable - Besides having lots of photos, Mashable does a pretty good job keeping the page updated with posts from their website, although oddly they all seem to be about Google+.

The New York Times - According to their profile, The New York Times readers wanted to see photographs and international news on Google+. Which is exactly what the Times gave them when they put out a call for their “Picturing 7 Billion” project in honor of the Earth’s population passing 7 billion people in late October.

Al Jazeera - The English version of the Arabic-language news network has original embedded videos, articles and more. It’s a great way to follow Al Jazeera if you don’t have TV.

The Huffington Post - Whether you’re in the mood for “Obama Healthcare Reform Ruling” or “Panda Pees On Sleeping Pal’s Face” The Huffington Post’s Google+ profile is the page to be at.

Breaking News - MSNBC’s Breaking News page posts the most recent reports from a variety of national and local news outlets.

A Chrome app, to be precise.

Airplane passengers and wilderness hikers are rejoicing the world over, as Google has announced the imminent return of Offline Mode to Gmail, Google Docs and Google Calendar. First introduced in January 2009 for Gmail, offline mode was axed following Google’s elimination of Google Gears in March 2011.

Now, however, offline support for Google’s email, calendar and document editing services is coming back for users of Google’s Chrome web browser. Offline versions of Google Docs and Calendar will be rolled out over the next week, while Gmail Offline is available today (August 31) by installing an app that can be found in the Google Chrome web store.

With Gmail Offline users will be able to read their email, compose replies and organize and archive their mail without an Internet connection. Basically, you can do everything except receive and send emails. Messages you compose are saved in Drafts and sent out the next time you get an Internet connection; received email is similarly downloaded whenever you are connected to the ‘Net.

To use Gmail Offline, download the Gmail Offline Chrome app here. Open up a new tab (Ctrl + T in Windows, Command + T on a Mac) when you are logged in to Gmail, and click on the “Offline Google Mail” icon under “Apps.” You are now looking at your offline Gmail account, which has a design that resembles the Gmail interface for tablets. Read, organize, archive and compose away, even if your wireless connection is non-existent.

Google Calendar and Docs will be getting their Offline capabilities some time this week, though, somewhat disappointingly, users will not yet be able to edit their documents in offline mode (Google is working on it, according to the blog post).

Are users of Internet Explorer the dumbest on the Internet?

Findings from a survey conducted by Vancouver consulting firm AptiQuant suggest just that. The company gave IQ tests to over 100,000 people, found randomly through user searches and targeted advertising; the test-takers did not know they were being judged based on what browser they were using.

Though no significant differences were found across the IQs of Chrome, Firefox, and Safari users, the study did find that “subjects using any version of Internet Explorer ranked significantly lower on average than others.” Ouch.

Here is the damning chart:

A few things to note here. First, Internet Explorer users–especially those who have not upgraded to the speedier IE9–rank lower than their fellow Chrome, Firefox, and brainiac Opera web surfers. Is there a correlation between not updating your browser and intelligence? AptiQuant thinks so: “From the test results, it is a clear indication that individuals on the lower side of the IQ scale tend to resist a change/upgrade of their browsers.”

I would submit that some who haven’t upgraded aren’t “resisting,” but rather don’t know that it is an option; whatever the reason, those using older versions of IE do rank lower on the IQ scale.

Second, what’s gotten into Opera users? After barely cracking the median 100-point IQ barrier in 2006, Opera-goers now have the highest IQs amongst all web surfers. Opera is the worldwide leader in mobile web browsing, though it lags far behind Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome, and Safari in web browsing, according to an August 1 report by web tracking service NetMarketShare. Opera saw about 1.5% market share of worldwide usage, while Internet Explorer led the way with over 50%.

In response to the findings, offended Internet Explorer users have apparently sent hate mail to AptiQuant CEO Leonard Howard and threatened the company with a lawsuit. Even if IE users may be a bit dumber on average, at least some of them know how to email and litigate.

“I just want to make it clear that the report released by my company did not suggest that if you use IE that means you have a low IQ, but what it really says is that if you have a low IQ then there are high chances that you use Internet Explorer,” Howard said in a statement released by AptiQuant.

A spokesperson for Microsoft declined to comment, and an AptiQuant rep did not respond to a similar request. Disclosure: This report was filed in Google Chrome.

Google has been doing some major housecleaning: The web giant announced Wednesday that it would be shuttering Google Labs, an online incubator of experimental products. Thursday, Google alerted its users in a brief blog post that it was effectively phasing out its Google Toolbar for Firefox, a feature that users could install in their Firefox browser for easy access to Google.com, Gmail, sharing, and other services (See screenshot below).

Google wrote, “While Google Toolbar for Firefox works on versions up to and including Firefox 4 only, it will not be supported on Firefox 5 and future versions.”

The company attributed its decision to stop developing the tool to improvements in the Firefox browser, noting, “For Firefox users, many features that were once offered by Google Toolbar for Firefox are now already built right into the browser.”

Since taking over as CEO of Google earlier this year, Google co-founder Larry Page has attempted to refocus the company and put more support behind key initiatives. He said in a recent earnings call, “Greater focus has also been another big feature for me this quarter — more wood behind fewer arrows,” adding, “Focus and prioritization are crucial given our amazing opportunities.”

Though Google recently launched several major new products, including Google Wallet and Google+, the company has also been on a shuttering spree. Google announced this year that it would be closing Google Video, Google PowerMeter and Google Health, and also pulled features such as estimated travel times on Google Maps and realtime search results that pulled in tweets.

What Google products are you afraid will be phased out?

Self-hosted WordPress.org users got a nice surprise on Independence Day with the release of WordPress 3.2, “Gershwin.”

WordPress 3.2 is the fifteenth major WordPress release in the project’s eight-year history. The focus in this release was to make things faster, lighter and more streamlined.

We’ve spent some time with WordPress 3.2, both in its various betas and in the final version, and put together this guide to what’s new, improved and enhanced.

1. New Minimum Requirements

One of the larger technical changes in WordPress 3.2: This release officially drops support for older versions of PHP and MySQL. The new requirements mean that PHP 4 and MySQL 4 will no longer be supported.

This is a good thing. PHP 5 and MySQL 5 have both been available since 2005, and WordPress is actually one of the last major pieces of web software to drop support for the old versions. Even though WordPress 3.2 doesn’t actually do anything that requires PHP 5, this is the first step in that direction. Moving to PHP 5 and MySQL 5 means that future versions of WordPress can be lighter, take advantage of more new features and be better optimized for performance.

The new basic requirements are PHP 5.2.4 and MySQL 5.0. The popularity of WordPress and the fact that the team made the announcement of the switch a year in advance means that most major hosts who weren’t already running newer versions of MySQL and PHP have had a chance to upgrade.

You can find out if your web server meets the minimum requirements by installing the Health Check plugin from the WordPress directory. It simply tells you what versions of PHP and MySQL you are running and lets you know if that is appropriate for WordPress 3.2.

2. Goodbye, IE 6

In a similar vein, WordPress.org is following in the footsteps of WordPress.com and dropping support for IE 6. Supporting IE 6 has long been a struggle for the UI team — many of the new features and additions just don’t play well with the aging browser.

You can load the WordPress dashboard in IE 6 but it won’t look good or be very usable. For corporate users who are still forced to use IE 6 at work, use this as yet another opportunity to convince the bean counters to move away from IE 6 and onto modern browsers like Google Chrome, Firefox, Opera, Safari or IE 9.

3. New Default Theme

One of my favorite features in WordPress 3.2 is the new default theme, Twenty Eleven.

When WordPress 3.0 was released last year, it came packaged with a brand-new default theme, Twenty Ten. At the time, the WordPress Theme Team said the goal was to introduce a new default theme every year.

Twenty Eleven is the spiritual successor to the Duster theme for WordPress.com and WordPress.org users. Duster was developed by the gang at Automattic (the people behind WordPress.com) and it was a visually and technically impressive theme.

Twenty Eleven has taken the work on Duster and improved it, making it more stable and robust. Visually, the theme is clean and modern and it supports responsive layouts, which means that the same website will look great on a phone, an iPad or desktop monitors of varying sizes.

4. Distraction Free Writing Mode

The big “shiny” feature in WordPress 3.2 is the addition of a new distraction free writing mode. When users enter the fullscreen mode of the WordPress post editor, they are now treated to a new writing mode that aims at cutting down on distractions and making it easier for users to “just write.”

It’s a nice feature, particularly for users who like to spend a lot of time on their prose and don’t want to be distracted by sidebars, menus and options. Plus, the feature is smart enough to still allow users to access various parts of the publishing interface.

5. Redesigned Dashboard

Visually, the backend WordPress interface has received an overhaul. This is the first major user interface change since WordPress 2.7 was released in 2008. The new interface is cleaner, more streamlined and the interface has been lightened up.

The changes are subtle, but the overall effect, at least for me, is something that looks more professional and more polished. WPCandy has put together a full before and after gallery highlighting the interface changes.

You can also check out our gallery from earlier this year that walks through the evolution of WordPress from 2003 through 2011.

Though Mozilla‘s increasingly popular web browser just got a refresh in March with the release of Firefox 4, Mozilla developers have been hard at work and have already cranked out another beta release.

Firefox 5, announced on Tuesday, is now available for desktop devices running Windows, Mac, Linux, as well as for Android handsets.

A post on the Mozilla Blog claims that the new version introduces over “1,000 improvements and performance enhancements,” including new add-ons for users and developer resources such as CSS animation support.

Mozilla notes that its “Do Not Track” privacy feature, which lets the user block advertisers from tracking her browsing habits and preferences, will now be available for the mobile browser, as well as for desktop. “Firefox [is] the first browser to support Do Not Track on multiple platforms,” Mozilla claimed in its blog post.

Firefox 5 also lets the mobile user tweak her privacy settings directly from her mobile device. The settings page is laid out simply and presents only the essentials so the user can see exactly which options are on and which are off.

The new Firefox beta is also slightly faster than previous releases, according to Mozilla. Based on benchmark tests performed by Digitizor, Firefox 5 boast a speedy JavaScript engine and boot time, better support for HTML 5, and “minimal RAM usage” (even with 25 tabs open at the same time).

“Rather than reinventing the wheel,” writes Mashable, “Mozilla has added better support for web standards, fixed some bugs, made performance enhancements and added a few additional code touches.”

In a media event in San Francisco, Google announced new features including Voice Search, Search by Image, and Instant Pages. Interestingly, these features will only be available through the Chrome or Firefox browsers by using the appropriate plugin.

Voice Search
This feature, quite popular on mobile phones, has finally hit the desktop version. Currently, it is only supported by Google Chrome 11 or higher for obvious reason. Initially, it will only support the English language. Oh yes, it does require a mic.

Apart from the endless fun of throwing any weird question at your computer, this feature can actually be useful. Not just useful, but very useful – if you are not comfortable with hard-to-spell words (like me). It will also come handy when you can’t type a query because your hands are full, say while having lunch. All this hinges on the assumption that it will actually understand what you’re trying to say.

Search by Image
Google has been providing image results on text queries, but now it also supports the converse. If you are curious about an image you happen to have on the computer, just drag it into the search box on (http://images.google.com Alt text: Search by Image) images.google.com. Google’s computer vision techniques will then match your image to other images in the index and provide a “best guess” text description of the query, as well as similar images. This can also be done by pasting the image URL in the search box.

Instant Pages
This feature will help users get to their desired search results faster. According to Google, when you perform a search, it will pre-render certain web pages in the search result that are most likely to be visited by you. The company is currently building this feature into Chrome. Instant Pages is expected to go beta later this week.

These added features are promising and look likely to be embraced by users in short order. However, Google has turned a blind eye to other popular browsers. Is it possible that these features have more to do with Chrome’s market share than to providing more convenience to users?
The messages appear to be handcrafted and spoofed to seem to be from governmental colleagues of many of the victims.

Normally attachments in Gmail appear with a paper clip and links to view or download the item. The attackers created HTML that used fake attachment links that actually lead to a phishing page designed to look identical to the Gmail login page.

Mila wrote about these attacks in February, but the big news is Google sharing this information publicly. Most organizations prefer to keep security problems to themselves and maintain the illusion that their services are perfectly secure.

While this attack is not specifically a problem with Gmail, it is a widespread security weakness in many cloud services. Google sharing information with the public about how these attacks are executed helps all of us learn from these situations and build better systems.

Google gives some good advice in their post, although it seems strange that they feel the need to push Google Chrome as a solution to all security problems…

How should we respond to this news? We should take a moment to remind our users about best practices when using web-enabled technologies.

If you are ever presented with a login screen in your browser and you didn’t type in the address of the site you are trying to visit, close the window.

The browser now alerts users if the file being downloaded is malicious

Google boasts about several security features in its Chrome web browser. Now, Google has added one more feature in Chrome web browser which will alert users against malicious file downloads. Now that’s something every browser should ideally have so that users don’t have to be dependent on anti-malware programs. This experimental feature is currently made available to Chrome Development Channel for testing and initially, it will alert against malicious Windows executables.

The Google Safe Browsing API comes into picture when the browser checks if the Windows executable being downloaded originates from a malicious code bearing site or not. Also, it has the same privacy policy as in the Safe Browsing feature which means Google will never know what URL you’ve visited to download that particular file.

This new alert against malicious file download could be too small to be noticed. At times, users are in such a hurry that they click on the ‘x’ (Close) on any pop-up message. So instead of showing an alert just above the status bar, something more attention drawing is required to make this feature actually useful.

Google Chrome has been offering features such as alerts the users against faulty websites that intend to inject malicious code in the user system. Google accumulates data about such websites and makes it available via Safe Browsing API. Several web browsers – Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, and Safari make use of Google’s Safe Browsing API to warn users if they happen to visit webpages that have been coded smartly to inject malware code in the system.
Google didn’t promise any date when the feature would be implemented and made available via a stable build of the Chrome browser.
