After months of talk, Apple finally announced the release of its latest tablet device at an event in San Francisco, Calif. on March 7.

World, meet the new iPad. (That’ right, “iPad.” Not iPad 3, not iPad HD, not iPad 2X — just iPad.)

While the device doesn’t look too different from its predecessor on the outside, like the iPhone 4S before it, the differences are mainly internal. Share your thoughts in the comments below!

Retina Display - The photo above shows the difference between the iPad 2′s 1,024 x 768 pixel display and the new iPad’s high-definition Retina display, which has double the resolution and four times the pixels (2,048 x 1,536 pixels). Apple has described a Retina display as ”pixel density is so high your eye is unable to distinguish individual pixels.” And how does it stack up to other tablet displays? GDGT’s Ryan Block said of his first hands-on with the new device: “It’s the best display I’ve ever seen. Anywhere, period.”

4G, A First For Apple - Apple’s March 7 event marked a first for Apple, the arrival of 4G LTE connectivity on a mobile device. Purchased with a two-year contract from either AT&T or Verizon, a 4G iPad will, according to The Wall Street Journal, ”allow users to connect a[t] speeds roughly 10 times faster than current 3G data networks.” 4G models will also “work on any 3G network,” per GigaOm.
New iPad models equipped with this unique feature, however, will cost users slightly more than models without 4G. (More on this later.)

Meatier Specs – The new iPad may look pretty similar to the old one, but it’s packing some serious hardware upgrades within its thin frame. These include a faster processor, the “quad-core” 1GHz Apple A5X, which Apple claims to offer twice the processing power of the A5 CPU (found in the iPad2) and four times the graphics-rendering power of the Tegra 3 processor found in many Android tablets, per Wired’s live blog of the event. Gizmodo argues that Apple has also probably upped the device’s RAM, “if only to handle the new resolution.”

No Siri – The new iPad did not get Apple standout iPhone 4S feature, the voice-activated virtual personal assistant, Siri. What it did get was Voice Dictation, which will be a blessing for anyone who has ever tried to type on the iPad’s tricky virtual keyboard.
To use the handy new feature, just tap the microphone icon on the keyboard and start talking. Current languages supported by dictation include U.S., U.K. and Australian English as well as Japanese, French and German.

Look – While the new iPad offers quite a bit more than the iPad 2 in terms of display, hardware, and connectivity, the outside remains almost identical to its predecessor, measuring 9.5 x 7.31 inches.
As expected, the biggest difference between the updated Apple tablet and its predecessor is its thickness…

A Bit More Heft – Compared to the .34 inch iPad 2, the new iPad measures .37 inches deep, according to Apple’s website. In addition, the new iPad has .11 pounds on the iPad 2, weighing in at 1.44 lbs. The 4G version of the new iPad is even heavier, weighing in at a whopping 1.46 lbs.

New Photo Tools – The new iPad boasts 5-megapixel rear-facing iSight camera that shoots 1,080p HD video. The iPad 2′s rear camera was only .7-megapixels and recorded video in a paltry 720p.
iPhoto, Apple’s photo-editing software, is now available for the iPad. The app can be used for editing, effects, beaming photos between devices and sending finished products to iCloud or social networking accounts. The app also lets users create photo journals, digital scrapbooks into which users can insert maps, notes and weather widgets. The new iPhoto app costs $4.99 and is available today.

Personal Hotspot – The 4G version of the new iPad also comes with a feature called Personal Hotspot, which “can be used to share the fast network connection on your iPad with up to 5 other devices using Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or USB,” according to an Apple press release.

Powerful Battery – Even though the new features like Retina Display and 4G connectivity will be consuming a lot more juice, a larger, more powerful battery will keep the new tablet charged for the same amount of time as the previous model.
Phil Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing, had the following to say about the battery during Apple’s Wednesday event (per GDGT): “You may recall we claim 10 hours of battery life, and 9 hours on 3G. The new iPad delivers the same 10 hours of battery life, and 4G is 9 hours.”

Price And Availability – The WiFi-only iPad starts at $499 for the 16GB then jumps to $599 for the 32GB and $699 for the 64GB. The 4G version starts at $629 for 16GB and tops out at $829 for the 64GB version.
The iPad is available for pre-order now and will begin shipping on March 16.

Apps – In addition to its own apps, Apple also introduced a new generation of apps made specifically with the new iPad’s higher resolution and enhanced hardware capabilities in mind. According to Engadget, these apps came courtesy of third-party developers like game-maker Namco, which previewed its jet combat simulator SkyGamblers, and Epic Games, the developer behind popular role-playing sword-fighting game Infinity Blade and creator of the new Retina display-optimized Infinity Blade: Dungeons.
In addition, 3-D design software manufacturer Autodesk showed off its Sketchbook app, which allows for a whole new level of sketch detail thanks to the new iPad’s improved display.

According to a press release from employee branding company Universum, young professionals in the U.S. would rather work at tech companies than investment banks, government agencies or healthcare organizations.

In Universum’s study, over half of the ten most popular places to work were tech-related, while every investment bank on the list had become less desirable since the previous year’s rankings, reports The Wall Street Journal. (Mashable’s Google+ page, for example, currently boasts just under 30,000.)

Google’s social network has experienced remarkable growth since its launch over the summer. The company announced in October that Google+ membership had reached 40 million, and the web giant continues to pursue new customers by gradually integrating its various web products with Google+. Earlier this month, Google rolled out a new Google+ sharing button for YouTube and new Google+ extensions for the Google Chrome browser. In addition, a ” target=”_hplink”>controversial update to Google Reader recently tied the product more closely to Google+, although users didn’t take to the change as willingly as they seem to have welcomed Google+ Pages.

Initially, Google actively tried to keep businesses out of Google+ by deleting non-human profiles. Google has finally changed its tune to match those of Facebook and Twitter, both of which have embraced the presence of brands in the social space.

The MSNBC-owned Breaking News has compiled a list of top news organizations to add to your circles on Google+. We chose nine that showed particular spark, be it frequent posts, interesting content or great photos. Check out the news organizations you need to be following on Google+.

PBS - Embedded videos, frequent posts and links to interesting content, even if it’s not PBS, are what make the Public Broadcasting Service’s Google+ profile worth a follow.

The Atlantic - Instead of just using snippets, The Atlantic’s Google+ posts seem specifically tailored for, well, Google+. Many are expandable and tell enough of the story that if you just want a quick overview, you wouldn’t even have to go to The Atlantic’s website. They also give a great daily run-down of top stories.

Time - On the Time profile, you can check out Time covers, find the Google+ profiles of the magazine’s writers and read about what’s going on at their offices. For example, on Tuesday they apparently held a discussion with Brian Williams, Jesse Eisenberg and other celebrities about who should be named 2011′s Time Person of the Year.

The Wall Street Journal- The Wall Street Journal already has over 9,000 followers, so it’s no surprise that they have a lot of chatter on their profile in the form of comments and shares. Because the comments come right after each post, they are actually easy, and dare we say enjoyable, to read. Is it possible that Google+ will usher in a new era where comments aren’t the worst things on the internet? The photo banner across the top of The Wall Street Journal’s profile features drawings of Barbie and Snoop Dogg, which should not be overlooked.

Mashable - Besides having lots of photos, Mashable does a pretty good job keeping the page updated with posts from their website, although oddly they all seem to be about Google+.

The New York Times - According to their profile, The New York Times readers wanted to see photographs and international news on Google+. Which is exactly what the Times gave them when they put out a call for their “Picturing 7 Billion” project in honor of the Earth’s population passing 7 billion people in late October.

Al Jazeera - The English version of the Arabic-language news network has original embedded videos, articles and more. It’s a great way to follow Al Jazeera if you don’t have TV.

The Huffington Post - Whether you’re in the mood for “Obama Healthcare Reform Ruling” or “Panda Pees On Sleeping Pal’s Face” The Huffington Post’s Google+ profile is the page to be at.

Breaking News - MSNBC’s Breaking News page posts the most recent reports from a variety of national and local news outlets.

A study released Tuesday shows that 45% of the top 185 U.S. websites transmit identifying details about their visitors to at least four outside websites.

The data transmitted was primarily a “username” – which is the name a person uses to log into a website – or a user ID assigned by the website to a user. It was usually transmitted through referrers – which is information about the web page transmitted automatically.

In some cases, the data went much further: the study found for instance that the online dating website OKCupid sent the gender, age, zip code, relationship status and ‘drug use frequency’ to two companies that sell personal data in auctions, BlueKai and Lotame.

Lotame confirmed that is has a data licensing relationship with OKCupid, but said it does not use data in the “drug use category.”

BlueKai told Digits that it does not buy or sell data attributes like “drug use frequency” from OKCupid. “We do capture standard demographic attributes like zip, age and gender from several publishers,” a spokesperson said.

It’s not clear how many companies that received the data used the identifying information. But researcher Jonathan Mayer, a PhD student at Stanford University’s computer security lab, said that the study proved that online tracking is not anonymous.

Earlier in the week, Barack Obama visited the Silicon Valley headquarters of business-orientated social network LinkedIn, which hosted a town hall-style meeting to promote the president’s new jobs bill. The irony of talking about how to find jobs at a company that helps people find jobs was not lost on Jon Stewart of “The Daily Show.”

Stewart noted that many audience participants said they or someone close to them were unemployed. LinkedIn, Stewart said, had clearly not worked for the town hall attendees, and he claimed not to know what the service is designed to do for people who use it.

“I thought [LinkedIn] was an email inbox flooding service whose sole purpose in life was to remind me that a guy I went to high school with would like me to join LinkedIn so I can spam everyone I ever met,” Stewart said in his opening segment, making reference to LinkedIn’s infamous email invites, designed to kickstart the user’s network of connections and encourage new interactions on the site.

“This town hall does not look good for the website,” Stewart wet on to say. “It would be like going to a Craigslist townhall and having people get up, ‘Do you know any online sites where you can go to get a handjob and a gently used futon?’”

Real-world studies, however, suggest that LinkedIn may be more useful that Stewart let on.

Between 1998 and 2009, the number of people who use the internet to search for jobs has tripled, jumping from 24 percent to 74 percent, according a new study, reported by the Wall Street Journal. The study found that people who use the Internet to look for jobs decrease the duration of their unemployment by 25 percent. The researchers also noted that online job searches are most effective when used to contact friends and relatives about job prospects.

On the other hand, Forbes editor Susan Adams says it can be detrimental to conduct your entire job search online.

”Career professionals agree that job seekers should spend, at most, 20% of their time online,” Adams wrote recently.

As anyone who has ever sent resumes into the ether and never heard back knows, nothing beats being face-to-face with the person who has the power of the yes and the no.

Might we finally be getting the long-sought-after “dislike” button on Facebook?

The social-networking giant is working on an overhaul of its News Feed product, where users post status updates, photos, videos, and other items of interest, according to a Wall Street Journal report. Facebook is considering an unfiltered News Feed, which would dramatically increase the amount of content users see on their homepage, people familiar with the situation told the newspaper.

The site is also working on expanding the functionality of its “Like” button to include other hand gestures created by third-party developers, allowing users to share information about products or services with their friends. The move is seen as key to attracting more marketers to the social network.

A Facebook representative told CNET that the company was testing News Feed changes but declined to address changes to the “Like” button.

“We are currently testing a feature within News Feed that gives people the ability to see what their friends are commenting on and ‘liking,’ as these actions are being taken on Facebook,” Facebook said in a statement. “This test includes a small percentage of Facebook users, just a fraction of a percent. In the coming weeks, as we learn more from this test, we’ll keep making improvements and may expand it to more people.”

Facebook is expected to detail the updates at its F8 conference for developers, although the company hasn’t yet announced when that will be, the Journal noted.

Borrowing a feature from social-networking rival FriendFeed, Facebook rolled out its “Like” button in February 2009, allowing users to express their approval for the messages, photos, and other content their friends posted. However, the feature doesn’t allow users to quickly voice negative opinions, inspiring at least one developer to create a Firefox extension that adds a dislike button to Facebook posts.

Cash-rich Apple can offer many tips to the debt-ridden US government in financial management, says the Wall Street Journal, not the least being overcoming the ‘psychology of defeat’.

What would happen if Apple had to tackle the US debt crisis, asks David Weidner who has covered Wall Street for over two decades. ‘First, it would eliminate spending that’s not working. Then it would make a commitment to spend if necessary. Third, it would look for ideas to spend on. Finally, it would call customers’ bluff. How much are you willing to pay for what the government gives you?” he writes.

According to the report, the current US crisis has less to do with spending and revenue and more to do with psychology. The entire US system has ‘taken on a mind-set of defeat. It doesn’t seem to matter that the business model – taxing for revenue, spending for growth – isn’t broken. After all, it’s working in Germany, Canada, India and China.

‘We’ve given up on the model because of our debt situation. It’s a problem, and a pressing one. A default or lower credit rating would cause further damage to our credit picture.”

But unlike the US government, Apple, Google and Whole Foods never allowed the psychology of defeat to overwhelm them. They went through tough times, adapted and never stopped innovating and growing, according to the report.

‘Apple is the most cash-rich company on the US landscape. But it wasn’t always that way. Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak borrowed money from an Intel executive to start Apple. When Jobs returned to Apple in 1997, the company was losing money. It was psychologically on the ropes. Jobs borrowed $150 million from Bill Gates at Microsoft Corp. and overhauled the company, spending on ideas that worked, killing projects that didn’t. You know the rest of the story,” says the report.

‘Larry Page and Sergey Brin founded Google Inc. in 1995. The company was born out of a federal grant. Its first business funding came from a co-founder of Sun Microsystems. Then the company raised $25 million from venture capitalists. Google is also cash-rich, but it recently went $3 billion into debt because it needed to establish a credit profile,” the report adds.

‘John Mackey founded Whole Foods Inc. on a $45,000 loan from family and friends in 1978. The company was forced to borrow more when a fire destroyed its first store (it didn’t have insurance). The company still had $508 million in long-term debt at the end of September.”

There are only two types of companies: those growing and those shrinking, the report says.

‘The US government today has officially become the latter.”

As part of a broader initiative aimed at encouraging reporters to use its service, Facebook has produced a report outlining what reporters can do to increase engagement on Facebook, measured in terms of “likes,” comments, and other feedback.

Facebook’s analysis of twenty-five Journalist Pages monitored over a two-week period offers social media insights that are relevant not only for reporters, but also for brands, businesses and individuals hoping to increase engagement with users on the social networking site.

Here are some highlights and tips based on Facebook’s data:

Include a question, call to action and/or some personality in posts: According to Facebook, just 10 percent of the posts they monitored contained a question, but those that did earned twice as many comments than the average post and 64 percent more engagement. Adding what Facebook calls a “call to read or take a closer look” garnered 37 percent more feedback, while including personal or behind-the-scenes details increased feedback by 25 percent. A Buddy Media study focusing on Facebook engagement found similar results: ending a post with a question corresponded to 15% more engagement, measured in terms of metrics such as “likes” and comments.

Add an image: The number of “likes” received by posts that included photos were 50 percent higher than posts without images. Attaching a thumbnail image with links posted to these Pages corresponded to a 50 percent increase in comments and 65 percent increase in “likes.”

Post later in the week and post content in the mornings, at the end of the workday, or late at night: Facebook’s study, like a several before it, found that user engagement was highest toward the end of the work week, with posts shared on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday garnering the greatest feedback. Facebook writes that items shared on Sunday received “the highest amount of feedback at 25 percent more likes and 8 percent more comments above average,” while “referral clicks were above average Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday — with links getting 85% more clicks on Saturday and 37% more on Wednesday than an average post.”

Likewise, Buddy Media’s report also concluded that engagement with brands’ Facebook pages was lower Monday through Wednesday, and higher on Thursday on Friday. However, their data suggested that engagement actually dipped on Saturdays.

Facebook also determined its users to be most active in the morning, during the final hours of the workday, and late at night, conclusions that corroborate other studies on Facebook usage. Buddy Media found that Facebook engagement peaked during off-hours as opposed to during the workday, yet a 2010 Vitrue study found users were most active around 11AM, 3PM and 8PM ET.

Post stories about “education, politics and behind-the-scenes insights and analysis:” According to Facebook these topics generate the most engagement from users: “Education posts got 2X more likes, politics received both 1.7X more likes and 1.6X more comments, and a journalist sharing their thoughts had 1.4X more likes,” Facebook wrote. Other research has suggested Facebook users’ interests aren’t quite so high brow: as the Wall Street Journal reported in 2010, a study by Dan Zarrella of HubSpot found that posts with sexual references in their titles were “nearly 90% more likely to be shared than average.”
