Windows Phone Head “Charlie Kindel” Quits Microsoft

Charlie Kindel, one of the most public faces of Microsoft‘s Windows Phone group, has quit Microsoft after 21 years to start his own company.

Kindel was charged with getting developers on board for the new platform, and he and his team have done a pretty good job so far — Windows Phone has more than 25,000 apps after less than nine months on market. But it still trails behind the hundreds of thousands of apps available for the iPhone and Android. A lack of long-tail apps is really the only glaring gap in Microsoft’s mobile platform, which is otherwise a solid competitor.

Kindel reported the news on his personal blog this morning and posted his good-bye email. It’s mostly full of inside jokes, but one funny bit:

These are unfortunate social media fantasies and free marketing delusions. The mere existence of a market for your product or service does not guarantee anyone will listen to or care about your brand. People are bombarded with thousands of messages every day, which makes it difficult for business owners to garner attention and convert that attention into income.

DoubleClick Founder’s New Startup Raises $6 Million

FindTheBest, a comparison and decision engine, has completed a $6 million round of financing courtesy of the Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers’ sFund.

The newly secured funds will be used to launch a network of vertical comparison sites and help the budding startup expand internationally.

Founded by DoubleClick creator Kevin O’Connor, FindTheBest launched in August 2010 to help consumers make faster and more informed decisions by objectively comparing information on products and services.

The FindTheBest name is meant to suggest that users can turn to the site to find the best [insert anything here].
