WikiLeaks suffers data loss

Der Spiegel is reporting that WikiLeaks has had… wait for it… a data leakage accident. You might think, “So what? The data has already been leaked!”

Unfortunately, that isn’t quite as clear as it seems. WikiLeaks goes to great lengths to protect both their sources and potential informants by redacting their details from the data before publication.

Last summer Daniel Domscheit-Berg had a dispute with Julian Assange and departed with a chunk of the WikiLeaks staff to form OpenLeaks.

In the process Domscheit-Berg was reported to have taken data from a server containing the 250,000+ leaked diplomatic cables in encrypted form and left Assange without access to the contents.

Facebook has announced that it is rolling out what appears to be a major change to its privacy settings.

In a blog post published today, Facebook VP of Product at Facebook Chris Cox announced what he described as “a bunch of improvements that make it easier to share posts, photos, tags and other content with exactly the people you want.”

The changes will begin to roll out to Facebook users in the coming days, but here’s a summary of what’s new:

However, the messages are really designed to steal your Twitter usernames and passwords.

Facebook Storing Numbers From Your Smartphone: What You Need To Know

Facebook users have a new privacy concern after discovering that the social network apparently stores a list of phone numbers belonging to your Facebook friends and, apparently, to contacts stored in the mobile device that you use to access Facebook’s mobile app. (Before you panic, this list is not publicly visible to your entire social network.)

According to The Washington Post, this Phonebook Contacts feature has been live for “a few years,” though many users are just noting its existence.

Google‘s new “Plus” social networking service attracted more than 10 million users within a week of its public beta. That is a remarkable number of people signing up for an unfinished social network when the field of options is already quite crowded.

Why would so many people flock to Google+? The one thing almost everyone that I know references is privacy and control, or at least the hope that it might achieve that end.
