Centre Wants RIM To Install Servers In India

The Government of India expects Blackberry makers to build servers in the country to monitor data passed on by the handset.

The Government of India has asked Research In Motion to install servers in India or else to close shop by the end of this month.

 

Research In Motion have offered a solution where specific or suspicious numbers could be given to them and they would in turn decrypt the BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) and BlackBerry Enterprise mail Service (BES) of the smart phones in question, sources in the Telecom Ministry said.

However, the proposal was rejected as the telephone numbers given for monitoring could be in danger of exposing the source to an outside company and thus cause a threat to the country, the information transferred also posed a risk of being hacked.

The centre apparently has told the BlackBerry makers that they should deploy their interception server in India with the Indian Service Provider having a definitive tracking system before August 31 or else they must stop the service.

Nokia All Set To Launch Dual SIM Phones

Nokia all set to unveil C1 and C2 dual SIM phones in the Indian Market

Finnish Handset makers Nokia is all set to debut in the Dual SIM market with the launch of its two new mobile phones C1 and C2.

Expected to launch by this year, C1 will allow the user to carry twoSIM cards, while only one can be activated at a time. On the other hand, C2 will support both SIMs working simultaneously. The phones would sport features like FM radio, a 1,000 entries-address books, LED torch, VGA camera. In addition to that the phone will be integrated with Nokia Life Tools service (for information on healthcare, education and entertainment) as well as Ovi Mail.

The mobiles will be priced between 1,500 and 2,500.

When Maths Doesn’t Add Up In India

Mathematicians in India rue over the lack of interest of Indian students in Mathematics.

The International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) a nine day event which brings together mathematicians around the world is being hosted by India for the first time in the 113-year history of the body.

The event addressed by President Pratibha Patil stressed on the need to promote mathematics among the young generation. The mathematicians feel that the younger generation have lost interest in applied mathematics and are more interested in pursuing careers like Engineering and other viable career options.They also added that newer teaching methods were required to increase the interest among students in the subject.

The President later on handed awards to eminent mathematicians on the occasion. Four Fields Medals were presented to Elon Lindenstrauss (Israel), Ngo Bao Chau (Vietnam), Stanislav Smirnov (Russia) and Cedric Villani (France). The Rolf Nevanlinna Prize was presented to Daniel Spielman of Yale University, while the Gauss Prize was given to Yves Meyer of France. The Chern Medal Award for lifelong achievements in Mathematics was presented to Canadian Louis Nirenberg of New York University.

India Develops A Navigation System Of Its Own

ISRO has developed a satellite-based navigation system to help aid air traffic from Southeast Asia to Africa.


Indian Space Research Organization has launched GAGAN or the GPS Aided Geo Augmented Navigation which will help the civil aviation sector as well as help in marine navigation, search and rescue operations, rail and road transport, survey and mapping as well as precision farming.

GAGAN is based on a constellation of 24 satellites positioned in six earth-centered orbital planes and will provide seamless coverage of air traffic from south Asia to Africa and connect to the systems of Europe and Japan. GAGAN is a joint initiative of the Airports Authority of India (AAI) and Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) and was launched by Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel. According to officials this system will help in providing enhanced safety features for the airlines as they would be able to have precision approach guidance towards runways in any weather conditions.

At present only countries like the United States, European Union and Japan have such a system.

Now Photo browsing Made Easier In Facebook

Facebook has unveiled a new interface for browsing photo albums that features bigger photos and a single page of pictures.

In the past sharing photos and searching for photos in friends albums was a tedious job for Facebook users. But, now Facebook ahs launched a new interface that promises better photo browsing experience.

The Photo sizes have been increased for better visibility and users navigating through photos wont have to click the “Next” button as the social networking site will automatically display additional photos as you scroll down a single page. In addition to that the social networking site has included a face detection feature to make it easier to tag photos on your home page and throughout the site.

Vodafone Introduces Delhi To E-rick

The E-rick or Eco Friendly Rickshaw launched by Vodafone aims to promote a green transportation for a cleaner and greener environment in the capital city ahead of the Commonwealth Games.

 

The Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit today unveiled E-rick, a battery- operated rickshaws, sponsored by telecom major Vodafone Essar in association with Eco-Activate, as part of its eco-friendly initiative and corporate social responsibility (CRS) activity.

Powered by battery the Eco Friendly rickshaw aims to ensure reduction in carbon footprint with zero emissions and help reduce the dependence on conventional fuel. The company will roll out 25 vehicles and will soon increase the number in the capital.

Priced at Rs 1.5 lakh each the E-rick’s main components are a fully recyclable polyethylene cabin, a heavy duty modular steel frame and an advanced, digitally controlled electric propulsion system. Stylishly designed the e-rick boasts of advance technical features.

When asked to comment about the E-rick, Sheila Dikshit said ‘There is a need for collaborative efforts to make Delhi a pollution-free zone. We have always been conscious about environmental issues and hence are supportive of such initiative which would help ensure a healthier and greener city,’
