It’s official: After months of speculation, Microsoft has set an official release date for Windows 8, its first update to the Windows operating system in almost three years.

After teasing that Windows 8 would be available toward the end of October, Windows President Steven Sinofsky officially announced that the next-generation of Windows will be released on October 26. That’s when you’ll be able to download it to your PC or purchase a new computer with Windows 8, according to a post on the official Windows Team Blog.

Microsoft had previously announced that an upgrade from Windows XP, Windows Vista, or Windows 7 will cost $40 for a digital-only download.

For Microsoft, October 26th is set to be a big day: Windows 8 is one of the most ambitious overhauls of Windows in years, perhaps ever. It features two separate interfaces: the traditional desktop version, with a start bar and icons, as well as a radical new touch-friendly “Metro” interface with the large, fluid live tiles of the Windows Phone operating system. Many key apps, including Internet Explorer, have been redesigned to run in Metro, while others, such as the recently unveiled Microsoft Office suite, will function as desktop apps.

It is unclear how the general public will react to this radical design change; early reviews have been mixed, which is not a good sign for a Windows user base that has been typically resistant to change. (It took until October 2011 for Windows 7, released in 2009, to surpass Windows XP, released in 2001, as the most used Windows OS). With Windows 8, Microsoft is certainly hoping to avoid another Vista-like revolt.

In the days before Halloween 2012, Microsoft will begin to learn whether it has a fan favorite or a dud in its new operating system. Too, the Microsoft Surface tablet should also be out around October 26th, as Microsoft execs had promised that its first foray into hardware would be out concurrently with the new operating system; we’ll also start seeing how well that tablet can sell, up against Apple’s market-leading iPad (and perhaps a new iPad Mini).

October 26th, in other words, is one of the biggest days in Microsoft history. Mark your calendars.

New versions of Microsoft’s word processing, spreadsheet and email programs will sport touch-based controls and emphasize Internet storage to reflect an industry-wide shift away from the company’s strengths in desktop and laptop computers.

The new offerings appear designed to help Microsoft retain an important source of revenue as more people access documents from mobile devices. The new Office suite also reflects the fact that people tend to work from multiple computers – perhaps a desktop in the office, a laptop at home and a tablet computer on a train and a smartphone at the doctor’s office.

Like an upcoming redesign of Microsoft’s Windows operating system, the new Office will respond to touch as well as commands delivered on a computer keyboard or mouse.

The addition of touch-based controls will enable Office to extend its franchise into the rapidly growing tablet computer market. Apple dominates that market with the iPad, though Microsoft has plans to compete with its own tablet, called Surface.

The programs will store documents online through Microsoft’s SkyDrive service by default, meaning users will have to change settings to store documents on their own computer. The programs will also remember settings, including where you last left off in a document, as you move locations.

The Internet-based services approach is one Google has been promoting with its own suite of similar programs, threatening Microsoft’s dominance.

“This is the most ambitious release of Office that we have ever done,” CEO Steve Ballmer said Monday in unveiling the new Office in San Francisco.

Microsoft will continue selling the package as standalone software that can be installed on computers, but the company expects the bulk of users will opt for an Internet-based version, which comes with automatic updates for a recurring subscription fee.

Other features in the new Office include:

_ Inkling, which lets you use a stylus to write on a device’s screen. Handwritten notes are converted automatically to text.

_ Integration with Yammer, a social network for businesses, and with Skype, a video chat service. Microsoft agreed last month to buy Yammer for $1.2 billion, while Microsoft spent $8.5 billion to buy Skype last year.

_ Bing Maps will be part of the new Outlook email program. If there’s an address in an email, just tap on it to get directions.

_ A “reading” mode on Word will make it easier to read word-processing documents on a tablet or e-reader. That mode will make the document look more like a book page. You can also embed video into Word documents, or share a document directly on Facebook.

You might not have realized it — what with all the excitement over “Magic Mike” and all — but we are rapidly approaching an exciting season: prime buying time for new Windows computers!

The latest, super-fast Intel chips are now shipping in new machines; Samsung, Vizio, Asus, and Sony have all outed well-reviewed new models. Windows 8, the transformative new operating system for Windows computers, will be released to the world in a few months – which either means an easy, $15 upgrade for your current machine, or that you should buy now if you think you’re going to hate Windows 8 and don’t want it pre-loaded on your shiny new PC).

So, what free programs should you download first for your Windows machine? Or, if you’ve already got a PC, what apps should you already be running daily? We think we’ve got 10 of the most essential, indispensable, must-have free programs for Windows. Dive in below, and tell us what we missed in the comments section.

• Soluto :

Even if you practice safe surfing, you’re going to want an anti-virus program. Microsoft Security Essentials is a free, ever-updating application, from Microsoft (duh), that keeps you protected against the latest viruses and bugs. Like Kathy Lee needs Regis, your Windows PC needs Microsoft Security Essentials. Download it.

(One other popular option, that is a bit more customizable, is AVG Anti-Virus, which you can find here. You should be fine with good ol’ Microsoft Security Essentials, however.)

• Ccleaner :

• Dropbox (Or, Google Drive, Or Microsoft SkyDrive) :

Don’t lose your photos and documents if your laptop suddenly crashes for some reason! A service like Dropbox — which can automatically upload your new photos, documents, and other essential files to the cloud for later access — can save you from a lot of hassle when you inevitably spill vodka all over your keyboard and destroy your computer. Store those essentials in an online cloud locker like Dropbox, Google Drive or SkyDrive. (PLUG: We have a mini-guide to determine which cloud-based storage service is right for you here).You can download Dropbox (here) and set it up so that it automatically backs up certain folders (like Documents, Photos, My Music, whatever) whenever you add a new file. Don’t use your PC without it (and don’t drink straight vodka above the keyboard, either).

• Prey :

Say your laptop gets stolen by some scumbag laptop thief. What can you do to get it back? What if you could you track it on a map, or lock it down remotely, or turn on the webcam to spy on the criminal?Enter Prey, an awesome program that allows you to do all that and more. You just download Prey and register your device for free on the Prey website. If the laptop ever goes missing, you can notify Prey online and use the Prey control panel to geo-locate it, set off an alarm to hear if it’s nearby, and lock down the device to prevent anyone else from using it.

Scumbag laptop thieves are out there. Be ready for them with Prey.

• Ninite :

This isn’t a “program,” per se, but it is an incredibly useful utility for mass-downloading a bunch of the applications on this list (and more essentials). Simply scan through the Ninite frontpage and check off the free programs you want to download to your computer, and Ninite will download them all at once.

No need to visit dozens of websites: It’s all right here, baby.

For $10, you can also get “Ninite Updater,” which scans your computer for apps and plug-ins that have updates available. A super useful utility, but obviously not free. At 10 bucks, there are worse ways to spend an Alexander Hamilton.

• OpenOffice :

Didn’t get the Microsoft Office software suite with Windows? No worries!

OpenOffice is a free suite of productivity software with applications that can replace Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Access. OpenOffice allows you to view documents created with Word and PowerPoint and Excel and whatnot while also allowing you to create those documents, too. It’s everything you would want from Microsoft Office, for free.

Save some cash while getting productive with your bad self. Pick up OpenOffice here.

• 7-Zip :

Simple one: 7-Zip lets you unzip compressed folders and zip up uncompressed folders. Other popular, lightweight, free archive utilities include WinRar and PeaZip, though you probably don’t need three archive utilities on your computer. I use 7-Zip and it suits me fine.

• Google Music :

I can hear you scoff — downloads of Google Musichave been slower than a turtle wearing flip-flops – but the free music locker service from Google is actually pretty handy. You just download a Google Music uploader, and the tool finds all of your downloaded music and uploads it into the cloud so that you can access and stream it from any device — smartphone, tablet, or computer — for free.

The upload process takes a while — weeks, even — but I’ve found that it’s worth it. Free access to my 14,000-song music library, on any smartphone, tablet, PC, or Mac, has been worth a simple fortnight of waiting for my music to finish uploading. Next time you’re at work and have a song stuck in your head that you can’t find on Spotify or YouTube, you’ll know why.

• VLC Media Player :

With the advent of the cloud, the VLC Player is less essential than it once was (did you know that once, when you wanted to watch a funny cat video online, you actually had to download a funny cat video file?). VLC Media Player is still useful as a lightweight, fast-opening media hub for all your music, TV shows, movies, DVDs, and more.

The iPhone 5 isn’t the only upcoming smartphone news of the day: Windows has announced on its official blog that the long-awaited Windows Phone 7.5 (codename: Mango), an update to its mobile operating system, will be released “in the next week or two.”

Windows Mango is the follow-up to the Windows Phone 7 OS, and the interface and many of the newest features will look familiar to those who have seen the “Metro View” on the new Windows 8 desktop and tablet operating system.

Among the new features on the smartphone OS: Total social media integration with the phone, with Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn updates mashed together in a “People” hub; more moving “Live Tiles” to make the phone’s front screen more active; a native “Local Search” app through Bing, which will search for businesses and things to do around the owner using the phone’s GPS; and an integrated Messaging hub, where users can switch between email, text message, Facebook chat and other messenger services with the same person’s linked accounts.

Mango and Windows Phone have an uphill battle to knock off smartphone kings Android and iPhone: At just six percent market penetration, Windows Phone lags behind Google’s Android OS (40 percent) and Apple’s iOS (26.5 percent) by a wide margin,according to a June 2011 comScore survey. Microsoft hopes to build on the momentum of its flashy Windows 8 announcement and positive early buzz surrounding Windows Phone Mango to make up that ground.

A recent report from Gartner found that Windows Phone could take over the number two spot from iOS by the year 2015; to this end, Microsoft has begun educating its retail partners on how to use and sell Mango, and one such retail partner, AT&T, recently unveiled its first Mango phones, the Samsung Focus S, Samsung Focus Flash and the HTC Titan.

Microsoft has given the old blue screen of death the blue screen of death.

On the recently announced Windows 8, available in very early developer’s beta, the Blue Screen of Death is going to look a little different, according to a discovery by Geek.com. The Blue Screen of Death, or BSOD, or Stop Error, has become something of a symbol of frustration with Windows.

If you’ve never seen one (you luck thing!), it’s current appears as a screen of white text on a blue background that appears whenever the system irreparably crashes and has to restart (hence, Blue Screen of Death).

Traditionally this screen was an ugly, digitized, almost frightening thing, with a long chunk of Courier text, followed by some code. Now, Windows has cleaned up the look and made it more friendly and less intimidating to non-programmers. When a future Windows 8 user sees this screen, he won’t have to be worried that his system crashed and might be dead forever!

Sure, it has the start-bar-and-icon “Desktop” look that Windows users are familiar with, but it also has a new, touchscreen-optimized interface called ‘Metro,’ which looks more like the Windows Phone operating system and which looks like the future of Microsoft Windows from here on out.

The touch-optimized interface was all Stephen Sinofsky, President of Windows, and Julie Larson-Green, Corporate Vice President of Windows, were talking about when they showed off Windows 8 to developers at the conference. (They did not, however, mention when the new OS would be available to users.)

Here are some screenshots of the new Windows 8 from Sinofsky and Larson-Green’s presentation, along with explanations of the newest features and interfaces that users can expect on their new tablets and PCs.

• Lock Screen - The new lock screen for Windows 8, which appears after you put your computer to sleep or restart or lock your computer. Notifications such as new email alerts, Wi-Fi availability and other essential, user-chosen information will be pushed to this screen.

• Start Screen - Here is the start screen in the ‘Metro’ view (the classic start bar “desktop” view is still available). Users can scroll side-to-side, much as they would on an iOS or Android phone, for different groups of applications. Immediately to the right of this homescreen is the media hub (seen above).

• Grouped Apps - Users have the option to categorize their apps into genre or function. Sinofsky and Green showed off a Media category, Games category and social networking category.

• Zoomed Out View - Users can zoom out from this view to see all of their apps at once. This is also where you can move entire blocks at a time closer to the homescreen. For example, if you want Games immediately next to your homescreen, or on the homescreen itself, you can pick up the entire block and drag it to the left.

• On Screen Keyboard - Emphasizing touchability, a demo of the Windows 8′s on-screen keyboard was shown to pop up with the scroll of the thumb. The new Microsoft OS still works, of course, with mouse and physical keyboard, but this is an option for those on tablets or touchscreen PCs.

• Control Panel

• RSS Feed - An RSS reader in Metro view–very scrollable and visual.

• RSS Feed – Expanded - An expanded view of the RSS feed. Users can scroll up and down within articles or left and right to switch between articles.

• Social Network - A view of a hypothetical social network, in a pane interface. You can see the news feed pane on the left and the full view on the right.

• Video Player And Settings - While playing a video of paragliding, Julie Larson-Green turned up the volume via in the collapsible sidebar settings panel.

• Multi-Tasking – News Feed And Video - You can view two apps or windows at once on your tablet by dragging them together and letting them “snap” together. Seen above, a scannable News Feed flanks a paragliding video, letting the viewer work while enjoying media entertainment.

• Newly Opened Tab In Internet Explorer - Starting up Internet Explorer in Metro mode. Here you can see the Most Visited pages and Favorites pinned to the page.

• The ‘Share Charm’ - The ‘Share Charm’ icon sits on the Start bar. When you see something within an app you want to share, pull out the start bar and click ‘Share”.

• Share Charm (Continued) - Select a piece of text, image, video or whole webpage and choose a contact in your address book you want to send that information to.

• Universal Spell Check - Green didn’t mean to, but she showed off another new feature of Windows 8 (also recently added to Lion OS X): Universal Spell Check, which proofs words typed in any Windows 8 app.

• Universal Search - Speaking of Mac, Windows 8 will have a spotlight-style universal search, which will let the user browse through the entire system for a search query.

• Universal Search (Continued) - The search bar can also scan through any of your apps, including apps like Bing that search online.

As many North Americans return to their offices after a long Labor Day weekend, they may find something unpleasant in their email inboxes.

A malware campaign has been widely distributed over the last couple of days, using a wide variety of different subject lines and attachment names.

There’s one thing in common between all the emails, however. All of the emails use sleazy slutty language to trick red-blooded men (we assume) into open the attached file.

The many different messages claim to come from what some would euphemistically describe as online “dating” websites. Typically the emails will claim to contain photos of a young woman in her twenties, who isn’t fussy about what kind of man she would like to hook up with (some say ages “between 21-99″ are fine).

As mentioned above, the subject lines and attached filenames can vary widely – but there’s definitely a theme..

Sophos detects the earlier attacks as malware designed to infect Windows computers: Mal/BredoZp-B, Troj/Agent-TFW and Mal/BredoZp-ET.

And here are some examples of the latest instances we have seen, which Sophos detects proactively as Mal/Zbot-CX.

If you make the mistake of opening the attached ZIP file, and running the files within, and you’re *not* protected by Sophos, you could be infecting your computer with a Trojan horse.

Once infected, your computer could allow a remote hacker to stealing information from your PC – all because you thought some sleazy slutty photographs of a young woman had fallen in your lap.

Social engineering tricks continue to fool users into making poor decisions – remember to always think with your head, not with your trousers.

Anyone anticipating the release of Windows 8 might want to check out Microsoft‘s new blog, Building Windows 8, which will chronicle the development of the forthcoming operating system.

Windows President Steven Sinofsky published the first post on Building Windows 8 (or B8 as it’s affectionately referred to by his team) on Monday evening.

“We intend to post regularly throughout the development of Windows 8, and to focus on the engineering of the product,” Sinofsky wrote. “Blogging allows us to have a two-way dialog with you about design choices, real-world data and usage, and new opportunities that are part of Windows 8.”

Microsoft gave its first public demo of Windows 8 in June at the D9 Conference. Host Walt Mossberg shared his initial reaction to the OS, saying that changes to the user interface looked “pretty radical” and that the new system could be “even bigger” than Windows 95.

Windows 8 was developed with both tablets and PCs in mind. The OS will work “with or without a keyboard and mouse on a broad range of screen sizes and pixel densities, from small slates to laptops, desktops, all-in-ones, and even classroom-sized displays,” according to a Microsoft press release.

Critics were intrigued by that first demo at the D9 conference, and they’ve been clamoring for more ever since.

Microsoft is encouraging Building Windows 8 readers to submit feedback as new details come out. PCWorld recalls that the company took a similar route during Windows 7 development by launching the Engineering Windows 7 blog.

TechRadar predicts that Windows 8 may be ready by autumn 2012. Until then, Microsoft fans can follow development updates via the Building Windows 8 blog. The @BuildWindows8 Twitter account will also post links to videos showing off the latest Windows 8 features.

It’s only been a few weeks since the world’s web users woke up to discover a big black bar at the top of their Google search results (introduced when Google+ was launched).

Now, some users of Google search might start seeing something else close to the top of the world’s most famous home page.

The warning message reads:

Your computer appears to be infected.
It appears that your computer is infected with software that intercepts your connection to Google and other sites. Learn how to fix this.

At first glance, you might be worried when you see this message and think you could be on the receiving end of a fake anti-virus attack.

After all, haven’t you been warned hundreds of times in the past to trust the anti-virus software you installed on your computer, not unexpected messages that pop up on websites you visit?

All is explained in a Google blog post, however.

Damian Menscher, a security engineer at Google, describes how he identified that infected computers were sending search traffic through proxies to the search engine. The intention of the cybercriminals behind the scheme was to modify the search results served up by Google to point to money-making pay-per-click sites instead.

In all, Google estimates that a couple of million Windows PCs may be affected around the world by the strain of malware they are hoping to warn users about. The firm says that it’s already been able to successfully warn “hundreds of thousands of users”.

Fortunately, although Google does not scan your hard drive when you search for things via google.com, it can detect the unique traffic signature from visiting infected PCs and make a pretty informed guess about your computer’s health in regard to this malware strain.

Google is hoping that the warning message will encourage users to update their anti-virus software, scan their computers and become more conscious of security issues.

I think what Google is doing should be applauded – anything which warns computer users about genuine malware threats has to be a good thing.

But, sadly and inevitably, there is the potential for cybercriminals to mimic the Google warning and direct users to dangerous downloads and scams. Of course, that isn’t a reason why Google shouldn’t warn their users, when it believes it has identified a security problem.

The danger is that many people may know what their own anti-virus software looks like when it displays a warning, but may be less familiar with how the Google warning presents itself, and where it links to.

Furthermore, Google points users to visit one of its webpages for further advice on how to fix the problem.

So, always be careful about what you search for, and the links you click on when trying to find anti-virus software.

No-one should be fooled into believing that Google’s initiative is any substitute for regular anti-virus software and sensible security practices. Google is attempting to alleviate a very specific malware issue that communicates with its infrastructure.

Google, you get my thumbs up for an imaginative idea that could help with a small part of the malware problem.

In all probability, most of us would be aware that using obvious or guessable passwords such as “password” or your pet’s

name isn’t a good idea at all.

But then what options do you really have to come up with a strong and secure password?

First things first, you should have a different, fairly long and very strong password for each account. It’s tempting to use the same password for all of your online accounts, but doing so puts every account in jeopardy if one of them gets hacked.

To break into accounts, hackers often employ a method called “dictionary attack”, which involves using words straight from the dictionary to guess the passwords. So it is strongly recommended that you don’t use standard words as your passwords; rather try creating meaningless words from a combination of letters, numbers and symbols. And don’t just replace letters in a word with a simple (e.g. ‘A’ with the @ symbol) because that’s a very common trick. The password can be strengthened by using a blend of lower and uppercase letters.

The password should be quite complicated. But still, try and use something which you would be able to remember. Come up with something which incorporates various alphanumeric characters. Ideally, it should be a mnemonic sort of thing which you can instantly memorise. But if you see that this is not happening then spend some time in memorizing that password.

Now remembering more than one passwords can be a daunting task. This is where a password manager comes into the picture. KeePass is a fairly good, free password-management tool that runs on Windows and Mac OS X. It stores all the passwords in one encrypted database which can be accessed by a single master password.
