Justin Bieber has become the first person in history to get 2 billion views on YouTube according to social media monitoring company Famecount.

It seems only fair that Bieber should be the one to break this record, since his career may never have been possible without YouTube. According to a Billboard profile, the Canadian teen began posting videos of himself singing cover songs at age 12. The videos were discovered by a talent scout, Bieber was signed to Usher’s record label, and four years later he’s so famous that a lock from his formerly floppy hair sold for over $40,000 on eBay earlier this year.

YouTube has long relied on user-generated content, like that of the young Bieber, but that may be changing. On Friday, Google’s video site announced that they would be adding 100 new video channels with original content paid for by YouTube. Celebrities who are already signed on to make videos include Madonna, Amy Poehler, Shaquille O’Neal and Deepak Chopra.

A hoax is spreading like wildfire on Facebook, claiming that hackers are posting pornographic movies on users’ walls which are invisible to the owners of the wall but are visible to friends and family.

You can imagine how that would be pretty embarrassing if it were true. Fortunately, it’s nonsense.

Here’s what a typical message looks like, spread by a Facebook user who thinks they are warning their friends – but really perpetuating the hoax.

ATTENTION FRIENDS! HACKERS ARE DOING DAMAGE AGAIN ON FACEBOOK! PORNOGRAPHIC MOVIES ARE BEING POSTED ON OUR BEHALF ON THE WALLS OF OUR PROFILES! WE DO NOT SEE THEM, BUT OTHER PEOPLE DO, AS IF IT WERE OUR PUBLICATION! SOMETIME EVEN OUR SUPPOSED Comments APPEARS. IF YOU SEE SUCH A THING IN MY HOMEPAGE, ALERT ME AND DO NOT OPEN IT BECAUSE IT IS A VIRUS! ...COPY AND RE POST THIS MESSAGE

The message is, of course, nonsense and users should not repost the warning.

We have not seen any evidence that hackers are able to post content to a compromised Facebook wall that the owner of the account cannot see.

The fact that the bogus warning tells you that it’s invisible to your eyes just adds to the panic, of course.

Yes, scammers have often posted thumbnails of what appear to be pornographic videos to compromised Facebook users’ walls, but we have never seen any incidents where the post was *invisible* to the user.

Although a hoax is nothing like as bad as a piece of malware squirming its way between users and stealing information, it’s still a nuisance, clogging up communications, increasing the overall level of spam and perhaps leading people to make bad decisions.

There’s an important lesson here – don’t believe everything you read on the internet, and think twice before you pass a story on to your friends.

This weekend we saw another spate of Facebook messages claiming to link to a BBC News report of the death of Lady Gaga.

Of course, the claims are untrue – and Lady Gaga is still alive.

But that isn’t stopping Facebook scammers from creating money-making websites that claim that the eccentric pop star has been found dead in her hotel room, and tricking Facebook users into sharing the links.

You would think that the scammers would show a little more imagination – rather than using the same disguises time and time again. But, hey, if the scam is working for them – why change it?

Clicking on the link will take you a third-party website, posing as a BBC News online report, which attempts to trick you into clicking on what appears to be a video thumbnail.

In the above screenshot you can see that Sophos Anti-Virus (in this case, ourfree anti-virus for Mac users) has correctly warned about the webpage and prevented you from being clickjacked.

We’ve seen scams very much like this, many times before.

Facebook could do a much better job, in my opinion, at helping users avoid falling for tricks like this and clean-up a lot of the mischievous pages and dangerous links on its network.

For instance, a quick search of “Lady Gaga dead” finds a number of Facebook pages attempting to spread the rumour of the artist’s demise.

Some of which have clearly been created with a scam in mind, like this following clickjacking example:

Watch out if you try to play the video as this is a clickjacking scam which attempts to silently say you “Like” the page when you click with your mouse.

If you’ve been hit by scams like this, remove the messages and likes from your Facebook page – and warn your friends not to click on the offending links. Clearly, Facebook needs to work much harder to prevent attacks like this from reoccurring and spreading so rapidly.

Mila Kunis, the star of movies such as “Black Swan” and “Friends with benefits“, is the latest celebrity to be making the headlines over allegations that hackers broke into her mobile phone and stole nude photos.

In the wake of the story about nude photos of Scarlett Johansson, several gossip websites have reported that they were contacted by people offering to sell them pictures stolen from Mila Kunis.

In Kunis’s case, the images are said to have been taken from her mobile phone, and apparently show her “Friends with benefits” co-star Justin Timberlake lying on a bed topless, wearing some pink underwear on his head, and an image of Mila Kunis in the bath.

A fourth explicit image is said to feature an intimate part of a man who cannot be identified because his err.. head is out of the frame.

It’s also alleged that private SMS text messages between Kunis and Timberlake are available on the internet.

Clearly, there’s a continuing theme of celebrities having nude photographs of themselves leaked onto the internet – whether to publicise their careers or latest movies, or to make money for those who stole the images.

Past victims have included Christina Aguilera, Lady Gaga, Miley Cyrus andVanessa Hudgens.

So, here’s my simple advice which I recommend to every Hollywood actor/actress, rapper and TV reality star. Cut it out and keep it in your wallet:

In fact, this is good advice for anyone to remember who finds themselves naked with a camera pointed at them, or is considering taking a self portrait before remembering to put on their clothes.

By the way, it’s best to print out this page before you cut-out this advice. You don’t want to damage your monitor. And ask a grown-up for help with the scissors.

And that’s how you avoid having naked photos stolen by hackers.

The FBI are once again investigating reports that nude photos of a famous celebrity have been leaked onto the web.

Twitter was ablaze earlier today with messages claiming to link to naked pictures of film actress Scarlett Johansson, which were allegedly stolen from her iPhone by a hacker earlier this year.

The photographs may or may not be of Scarlett Johansson, but I would suggest that every hot-blooded male exercises some restraint as it’s extremely possible that cybercriminals might exploit the interest to post dangerous links on the web designed to infect computers or steal information.

Of course, Scarlett Johansson isn’t the first celebrity to have fallen victim to a nude photo hacker.

Nude photos and videos of Vanessa Hudgens, the star of “High School Musical“, surfaced on the net earlier this year, after it was claimed the actress’s Gmail account was hacked.

Other victims in the past have included Christina Aguilera, Lady Gaga andMiley Cyrus.

Late last year, German investigators alleged that two hackers had
broken into the accounts of over 50 pop stars, including Lady Gaga, Kelly Clarkson, and Justin Timberlake.

In that instance, prosecutors claimed that hackers infected computers with malware in order to steal celebrities’ credit cards details, private pictures, emails and unreleased songs.

Celebrities may be very privileged, but they deserve privacy as much as the rest of us when it comes to their personal phone and email messages.

And like the rest of us, they are just as capable of being foolish about their computer security.

There’s a very simple lesson that celebrities should learn: if you must take nude photos of yourself, don’t leave them on your phone or store them in your email.

A shocking video of a man in a wheelchair falling down an elevator shaft? Is that really what you want to watch?

Well, if it is, then you’re just the kind of person that a newly-discovered Facebook scam is looking for.

Messages on the social network have been seen like the following:

This Video is really shocking. a man in a wheelchair is falling down the elevator shaft.

If you’re curious enough to click on the link you are taking to a Facebook page which looks like it is about to show you a video.

But think twice about clicking on the play button! The webpage will take your mouse click and silently use it to say that you “Like” the page and share it with your friends.

As far as your friends can tell, you’ve just shared a link to a shocking video of a man in a wheelchair falling down an elevator shaft.

Those people who are running addons like NoScript (on Firefox) will see a page intercepting the clickjacking.

The point of the scam is to draw traffic to online surveys – which earn the scammers commission and, in some cases, tricks users into signing up for premium rate mobile phone services.

If you are hit by a scam like this you should remove the page from the list of pages that your Facebook profile likes. Remember to remove any other pages you don’t remember liking at the same time.

The Pages that you like are shown at the bottom of the Info tab, under Activities and Interests. You may have to click on “Other pages you like”.

Also, remove it from your newsfeed, reporting it as spam to Facebook, so that you no longer share the offending link with your friends.

The latest Google Doodle, which went live for some on September 4, pays tribute to Freddie Mercury, who would have celebrated his 65th birthday on September 5.

In June, Google wowed the web with their interactive tribute to master guitarist Les Paul and inspired countless Google guitar tutorials.

This time around, they’ve honored the rock band Queen’s lead vocalist, who battled HIV for years before dying on November 24th, 1991 at the age of 45.

A video, which appears over the Google logo, features an animated tribute to Mercury, highlighting Queen’s 1978 hit “Don’t Stop Me Now.”

Queen guitarist and songwriter Brian May wrote a post about Freddie Mercury for the Google Blog.

From May’s post:

“Freddie would have been 65 this year, and even though physically he is not here, his presence seems more potent than ever. Freddie made the last person at the back of the furthest stand in a stadium feel that he was connected. He gave people proof that a man could achieve his dreams—made them feel that through him they were overcoming their own shyness, and becoming the powerful figure of their ambitions. And he lived life to the full. He devoured life. He celebrated every minute. And, like a great comet, he left a luminous trail which will sparkle for many a generation to come.”

The song lyrics featured in the Google Doodle seem to echo May’s thoughts:

“I’m a shooting star leaping through the sky/Like a tiger defying the laws of gravity/I’m a racing car passing by like Lady Godiva/I’m gonna go go go there’s no stopping me”

Google may have started to roll out verification badges for celebrities and public figures who have Google+ accounts. But, unfortunately, it’s not going to close the door to fraud on the fledgling social network.

The idea is to make it easier for members of the public to tell if they’re the person you’ve added to a Google+ circle is the real Dolly Parton, the real Britney Spears or the real Alyssa Milano.

According to a Google+ post by Googler Wen-Ai Yu about the initiative, verified accounts have a grey checkmark next to their name. Rolling your mouse over the tick, shows that it is a “verified name”.

So, for instance, Britney Spears now has a verified account on Google+ :

Whereas this unofficial Britney Spears account doesn’t:

What is far from clear is how the verification system works, and what hoops celebrities and public figures need to jump through to convince Google+ they are who they say they are. Furthermore, there are no signs yet that the system is going to be rolled out to the general public anytime soon.

It looks like it’s going to be a case of “If you are a Google employee or if you’ve got enough celebrity or social media clout, then you may be able to get verified – otherwise.. tough”.

But there’s a bigger problem.

Google+ is following in Twitter’s footsteps regarding a way to verify the accounts of public figures and celebrities.

A “Verified Account” badge only tells you that it’s the official Google+ page for that person. Importantly, it doesn’t tell you that it really was that individual that wrote the message you just read.

It won’t stop celebrity Twitter users from choosing dumb passwords, or being careless with their credentials.

Poor Britney Spears and Lady Gaga, for instance, are just a handful of the celebrities who have had their verified Twitter accounts compromised in the past.

And if Google+ does eventually roll out verified accounts to the great unwashed public, remember this. If it’s your (non-celeb) friend or family member who has their Google+ account comandeered by hackers you’ll be just as susceptible as ever to believing their posts to be true and in danger of clicking on their (potentially malicious) links.

None of this is to say that Google+’s verified account facility is a bad idea. It’s just not as much of a security fix as some folks might hope.

All it does is tell you who the account belongs to, not who posted the messages to it.

Messages are spreading rapidly on Facebook claiming to reveal a way to find out who has been secretly viewing your profile.

Here are a couple of examples:

Brilliant!! Now u can see all your profile stalkers! --> [LINK]

and

WOW!! I can't believe that you can see whose viewing your profile. I've just seen my top 10 profile peekers and I'm shocked on whose Viewing my Profile. You can also see whose viewing your FACEBOOK PROFILE HERE: [LINK]

Clicking on the links takes you to a splash screen for a rogue application, and you are fooled by the promise of discovering who has been viewing your Facebook profile to give permission for a third-party application to access your account.

Want to see who views your Facebook profile?

This is amazing!

Now you can see who is viewing your profile and find out how many profile views you got. Just use our application and press button below and then Allow to analyze your Facebook profile!

Obviously you shouldn’t grant permission on the following screen for the application to access your Facebook profile, but an alarming number of users appear to have no qualms about exposing their confidential information and degrading their security in this way.

The problem is that this isn’t a legitimate application request. A rogue application wants access to your account so it can spread the messages and its link even further, spreading the campaign virally across the social network. The goal? To earn money by driving traffic to an online survey.

Notice that the survey presents itself in a convincing Facebook style, which may trick some users into believing that it is legitimate.

If you’ve been affected by this scam, you should clean up your account before any further damage is done.
