Android Apps Of Year 2011

Android Market

On Monday, Nielsen released the results of a study on the most popular smartphone apps in the Android market. The rankings were based on how many people had used the app during the previous 30 days. The data was collected through proprietary device meters that had already been installed on the participants’ phones as part of an ongoing smartphone study. The results were broken down by age groups: 18 – 24, 25 – 34 and 35 – 44. Several of the apps were similarly popular across all three groups. Facebook and Gmail, for example, had been used by at least 70 percent of all participants, regardless of age. Other apps showed more surprising results. Angry Birds was most popular among the oldest group, (35 percent of 35 – 44-year-olds had used it) and least popular in the younger demographic (22 percent of 18 – 24-year olds had used it).

When compared to the top free iPhone apps, the results indicate that Android users are somewhat less creative than iPhone users when it comes to their application choices. Six of the top seven most-used Android apps come pre-installed on Android phones, while none of the top seven iPhone apps come preloaded. Check out  below to see the most used Android apps for people aged 25 – 34.

This year, the most popular search were dominated by the usual news stories, celebrities and natural disasters, but there was also one big surprise. A gadget (see slideshow) topped Yahoo’s list of the top ten most-searched terms, a rare occurrence, according to Yahoo.

“In the 11 years that Yahoo! has compiled its annual list of top searches, PlayStation 2 (2001 and 2002) is the only other device to have captured the top slot,” Yahoo wrote in a post accompanying the list. “This year, [a gadget again] led the queries, bypassing a reality TV divorcee and America’s most wanted terrorist.”

As the country enters its ninth month of violent protests, the Syrian government has reportedly outlawed iPhones in a move to crack down on activists who were allegedly using the device to expose government abuse.

On Friday, Times Live reported that, according to the the Lebanese website Al Nashara, the iPhone ban had been issued by the Customs Department of the Syrian Finance Ministry. The Department’s statement read in part, “The authorities warn anyone against using the iPhone in Syria.”

Said an activist quoted in Times Live, ”It is enough for any tourist or guest visiting Syria to own an iPhone to be a spy suspect.”

SNAP Interactive, the company behind social dating app Are You Interested, recently released the results from a study that gauges which cities have the most active online dating communities. The results, some of which may surprise you, are based on usage data collected from AreYouInterested.com and from a survey of 500 fans of the Are You Interested Facebook page.

Are You Interested is currently one of the largest Facebook dating applications. With it users can browse through other Facebook members who have the app and answer the question “Are you interested?” about users they come across. If the person you professed interest in is also interested in you, you both get a message saying so. If only one of you is interested, no message is sent. In 2009, SNAP Interactive expanded Are You Interested to include a location based iPhone app, which lets you browse users in your area.

The Internet security experts at Bit9 have put a twist on their annual mobile security study. Rather than focusing on the least secure applications, the company decided to examine which smartphones are most vulnerable to malware exploits and hacking attempts.

Researchers looked at the most popular mobile devices on the market and identified which were the most vulnerable.
According to the study’s findings
, Android handsets are the most at-risk devices. “56% of Android phones in marketplace today are running out of date and insecure Android operating system software,” the study explains. Among the most frequent offenders were Android devices from HTC, Motorola, LG and Samsung.
