It used to be that the only technological expertise you needed to get a job were basic word processing and webmail skills. Times have changed. According to Indeed, a job-finding search engine, the ten fastest-growing keywords in job postings have nothing to do with punctuality or writing skills, at least not the kind of writing most of us are used to.

Indeed analyzed millions of job postings and found that the top ten skills employers are looking for are all related to software development, mobile development and social media.

On Monday, market research firm NPD announced that the iPhone 4 has held its position as the most popular smartphone in the United States.

According to NPD’s third quarter report, smartphone sales now command 59 percent of all mobile phone sales, which is an increase of 13 percent from this time last year. This is up 5 percent from the first quarter, when smartphone sales outpaced feature phones for the first time ever.

Although, according to a recent Gartner study, cellphone sales are down overall. Global mobile sales only grew at 5.6 percent this quarter, down sharply from 16.5 percent in the previous quarter. Gartner predicts that this slowdown will be relatively short-lived, and should turnaround by mid-2012.

The iOS home screen.

Having trouble with the battery on your iPhone? You’re not alone: A recent wave of complaints from iPhone 4S owners apparently even has Apple worried about battery issues.

But fear not, iPhone owner! You may not be able to have a work battery and a home battery like your Android-toting brethren, but there are simple steps you can take right now to improve the battery life on your new iPhone. Go through the List to get some battery-saving advice, and remember that these are tips, not mandates: Pick and choose what you like, discard what you don’t.

  • Turn Off “Setting Time Zone - Could the battery drain on the iPhone 4S be caused by a bug in Apple’s iOS 5 operating system? It sure is a popular theory, though Apple hasn’t responded yet.
Basically, this supposed bug is causing the iPhone to repeatedly use your phone’s location services in order to find out whether or not you’ve switched time zones, even if you’re just sitting on the couch (which, let’s face it, you’re usually doing). When I checked my Time Zone settings, my iPhone was indeed currently using my location to ensure that I had not switched time zones in the past 24 hours. Not good, and certainly a potential battery killer, depending on how often this is happening.

ask job candidates: these are just a few of the revelations presented in Walter Isaacson’s biography of Steve Jobs.

The 571-page book, out October 24, is based on more than a hundred interviews, including over forty with Jobs himself. It presents a riveting, detailed account of Jobs’ personal and professional life, from his marriage and drug use to Jobs’ take on other tech titans and the way he built Apple.

Reviewers have, thus far, had high praise for the book.

“In the end, it’s a rich portrait of one of the greatest minds of our generation,” writes the Associated Press’ Barbara Ortutay. The New York Times’ Janet Maslin argues that Jobs’ life “calls for a book that is clear, elegant and concise enough to qualify as an iBio” and notes that Isaacson’s “Steve Jobs” ”does its solid best to hit that target.” Though calling it “occasionally workmanlike,” Entertainment Weekly’s Tina Jordan compliments the book as ”thoughtful,” “broadly-sourced,” and “thorough, filling in all the holes in Jobs’ life.”

Everyone is talking about Siri on the iPhone 4S. For some, the virtual voice assistant is the number-one reason why many chose to upgrade to the newest Apple smartphone.

Virtual assistants that can get things done and can understand natural speech are not limited to the iPhone 4S, however: There is a solid selection of third-party apps for both Android and iOS that can accomplish much of what Siri can (though obviously not with the same level of ground-floor integration into the system as Siri).

If you’re finding your iPhone’s Voice Control or your Android’s Voice Actions lacking for whatever reason, check out these Siri alternatives:
