New versions of Twitter’s mobile apps are coming in to land on a device near you.

On Tuesday, the official Twitter Blog announcedupgrades for the microblog’s apps for Android devices, including the Kindle Fire and certain Nook tablets, as well as on Apple’s iOS devices.

The iPhone and Android apps will both feature a swipe shortcut that lets the user view a profile and reply, retweet, favorite or share a tweet without having to leave her home timeline.

Both apps will also get a “find friends” notification, which explicitly warns the user that she’ll be uploading her mobile contacts to Twitter’s servers. This is likely a response to the controversy that erupted last week when the blogosphere discovered that Twitter and other popular apps like Facebook and Instagram were swiping users’ address books without notifying the users.

LinkedIn provided further evidence of online networking’s popularity and moneymaking potential with a fourth-quarter performance that got a glowing review on Wall Street.

The results announced Thursday indicate LinkedIn Corp. is playing an increasingly influential role in the employment market as millions more people post their resumes there. The professional-networking service has been turning into a digital rolodex for headhunters and job seekers alike.

LinkedIn added another 14 million profiles during the final three months of last year to bring its total membership to 145 million. Meanwhile, more companies have been paying to get additional access to LinkedIn’s membership as the U.S. economy has been steadily adding jobs in recent months.

LinkedIn gets more than two-thirds of its revenue from fees it charges companies, recruiting services and other people who want broader access to the profiles and other data on the company’s website. The rest comes from advertising.

The real-world benefits of space travel are sometimes condensed to little more than astronaut ice cream and zero-gravity pens.

But the aerospace industry has contributed thousands of practical technologies for use on Earth – and Nasa wants to tell you all about it.

For the last 35 years Nasa has released an annual publication designed to showcase some of the most useful applications of space tech and how they’ve flourished in the past year, in an effort to prove that fact to the world.

This year’s Spinoff Magazine lists 44 of these technologies, from LED chips initially developed to grow plants on the Space Shuttle that are now being used as a non-invasive painkiller, to a nontoxic biodegradable disinfectant first used to clean food in space and now being commercialised back home.

In a speech on Tuesday, Wales told the Hult International Business School that you have to be willing to make mistakes to build anything of value.

“The way I got here is through failure,” Wales said. “For a lot of my projects I should have quit a lot sooner.”

Wales also admitted that the Wikimedia organisation, which runs the collaborative encyclopaedia Wikipedia and other sites, had to become more diverse to survive.

“We do think we need more diversity in our community,” he said.

Wales told students that he was proud of Wikipedia’s decision to shut down its service for one day to protest the Stop Online Piracy Act (Sopa), which critics say would have imposed unhealthy restrictions on Internet freedom.

Wales said: “The act would have set certain precedents that are really bad”.
